Driven by an understanding of nature not as a separate entity from human existence but as one that includes humans and their activities, Tamami Terasaki's photographs reengage and redefine the genre of landscape, offering challenging and fresh perspectives, conceptual and visual. For this series Terasaki went into forest-covered mountains to photograph the views, sceneries and landscapes presented there. In the afterword Terasaki describes wandering in dense woods, struck by a dizzying uneasiness with no fixed point of view in which the sense of existence and consciousness becomes vague, until the sun glistens down and the murmuring of things in complete harmony can be heard. In his essay Wandering Gaze, Masafumi Fukagawa writes that the magnetic fields of historicity and meaningfulness are eliminated in advance: the flat images suggest no elements for analysis, yet do not reject the viewer's gaze and have a depth that gently absorbs it, so that a different view emerges for each viewer.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
