An alluring, strangely compelling photographic record of Miho Yokochi's journeys to seaside towns all over Japan. Yokochi was born near Cape Irago, at the far end of the Atsumi peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, where the Song of the Coconut is set; before long she came across coconuts at the ferry terminal in Irago and began to wonder where they came from and what journey lay behind them. Wandering along the seashore taking photographs, she felt a strong desire to spend all her time walking the seashores of Japan, like the coconuts that took so long to traverse the ocean. Local fishermen taught her about the tides and seasonal delicacies, beaches and lighthouses that recalled Irago, strong winds, laughing families and lovers; each place felt like her own birthplace. In her statement she hopes the book will inspire the reader to travel and to think about their own home.
