To mark the 150th anniversary of the school, Taichi Onoue returned to his former high school and spent a year documenting its buildings, students and facilities through the seasons, with 4 x 5 and 6 x 7 cm film cameras. The black-and-white photographs initially appear objective and methodical, but an undeniable sense of nostalgia and attachment soon emerges. None of his classmates or teachers were still there when the photographs were taken, yet his own childhood memories guided his choice of subjects: certain trees and inconspicuous corners of the grounds that hold a special place in his heart. The series transcends individual experience and captures the complex feeling of visiting places from the past again after many years. The book opens with a dedication to friends: sorrow shared, joy danced.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days.
