Yukio Sakaue focuses on the beauty of a rainy day. As he mentions in the afterword, the Japanese language has different names for different kinds of rain, from kosame (light rain) to kirisame (foggy rain) to harusame (spring rain). In his photographs of rural towns, overgrown concrete structures and vegetation, each instance of rain becomes its own event, transforming the world into a gentler, calmer place, at least until the sun comes out again. The book opens with a haiku by Mantaro Kubota about a shower after which the water still keeps some blue sky, and the afterword wishes to be like the spring rain, which helps fade small, coffee-stain-like memories.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
