The painter and graphic artist Lyonel Feininger did not make his first attempts at photography until he was fifty-eight, when he had already been a master at the Bauhaus for almost ten years. Probably encouraged by his sons Lux and Andreas and by the experimental pictures of his Dessau neighbour Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, he took up a camera from 1928 and tried a variety of avant-garde techniques, leaving behind night shots, double exposures and views in which the painter of crystalline architecture and landscape can be recognised.
