Basilico's own retrospective of his working life, retracing his creative itinerary from his first images made in Glasgow in 1969 through to his investigations of cities and metropolises in the 2000s. "Before turning to the urban landscape," he writes, "I was interested in photojournalism. I had points of reference: the work of Bill Brandt or that of Eugene Smith." From there the book follows him across the capitals of Europe and its most important ports, into the post-war desolation of Beirut and the factories of Milan, guided throughout by what he called the slowness of the gaze, a philosophical and existential attitude through which one might try to recover some possible sense of the external world. Published simultaneously in three languages with a critical text by Achille Bonito Oliva, the book stands as the fullest single-volume account of Basilico's working method across almost four decades.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
