Essay by Nina Keel
As a boy, this photographer and filmmaker passed the studio of a sculptor every day on his way to school. Watching the artist working captivated him, and once school was finished in the late 1950s he began working as the sculptor's assistant and apprentice, eventually becoming a sculptor himself. After studying photography and taking up filmmaking as well, he occupied himself with the sculptor's work also with the camera, resulting in countless images and an earlier film portrait. This book features a selection of his predominantly black-and-white pictures, many with a single sculpture as motif, highlighting the artist's strong archaic expressiveness.
