Essays by Simone Foerster, Bernhard Maaz, Raz Samira

One of the leading figures of photography in the 1920s and 1930s, today considered one of the most important avant-garde photographers of the twentieth century. In just a few years of practice, this self-taught artist became a well-known representative of German photography, participating in almost all the important exhibitions of her time. She captured plants, objects, people, and everyday situations in pictures that have to this day lost none of their allure and poignancy. Through clear structures, precise compositions of light and contrast, and narrow framing, she drew a special kind of poetry out of the motifs of her personal environment and developed her own, distinctly modern pictorial style. This volume features some 100 of her photographs, several published here for the first time, complemented by essays on her work in art-historical context.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
