A master of twentieth-century image-making, best known for documenting in some three thousand images the construction of a new capital city between 1958 and 1960. Nevertheless, his work remains relatively unknown, and even those familiar with the construction images may be surprised to learn how large and strikingly diverse his body of work is, having also trained as an architect. Abandoning studies in that field to follow his passion, he traveled extensively and eventually settled in Rio de Janeiro, welcomed by a circle of artists and intellectuals who became important figures in the culture of his adopted country.
