In the 1980s, a Spanish city was the country's most polluted, due to mining and iron industries then in terminal decline. Seven years after the country joined the European Union, a radical transformation was initiated, and celebrated architects were brought on board to design buildings that would serve as icons of the reinvented city. This photographer documented the transformation, so successful that the city has since become a model for former industrial centers throughout Europe. Taken over more than two decades, the striking black-and-white images tell the compelling tale of decline and rebirth.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
