Short biography and memories from eight residents of the valley
Published by Stiftung Museum Ciaesa Granda und Atelier Giacometti

In 1943 this photographer first came to an alpine valley during his military service. There the nineteen-year-old met sculptor Alberto Giacometti -- the beginning of a close friendship that lasted until Giacometti's death in 1966. He remained closely connected to the valley and its people throughout his life, keeping a second home there from 1965. Famous for his portraits of artists, he repeatedly photographed Giacometti there and, later, a Swiss painter friend. Yet his estate also comprises around 5,000 images that take the valley itself as their subject: landscapes, villages, buildings, and people, barely exhibited or noticed until now. This book gathers a representative cross-section of these images, forming a long-term reportage on this unique valley at the southern edge of the country.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
