Published for the first monographic show in Italy given to the New York master of street work, the volume gathers a wide body of pictures including Faces (2013-2024), portraits made as a figurative chronicle of cities around the world — from the United States to England, by way of Mexico, Greece and Colombia — that come out of a relation and a dialogue strongly sought.

Beside them stand the black-and-white pictures of the beginning (1968), those made in Japan with members of the Yakuza (1996-1999), in Haiti (1985-1995), in Europe between France (1994-2015), Ireland (1996-1997) and England (2000-2012), and above all in his native city, New York (1969-1995). Two unpublished works inspired by Raphael's Angel and Christ the Redeemer, held in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, close the volume.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
