Earthquakes have opened tears in the fragile geological and social fabric of Italy that are often never sewn up, leaving deep traces on the ground. After the shock that hit Abruzzo in 2009, Francesca Cao set out to map the country in search of the residues of past earthquakes — the architecture of the emergency, the reconstructions attempted and those that never happened, which have marked the post-seismic landscape and the way the affected communities live.
