Portugal, August 1975. A young news photographer arrives in Lisbon from Rome along with thousands of young people of the European left, drawn by the particular moment the country was living through, a year after coming out of decades of dictatorship: the season of the Processo Revolucionário em Curso.

After the first days in Lisbon, taken up with marches and political gatherings, he decided to tell that phase of the revolution from a different angle. From then on came a very strong tie with the community of Couço, where over the following forty-nine years he would return more than once. After one of those returns, in 1986, eleven years after the first stay, he published A Portuguese Story.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
