“This Inferno is not under the earth but deep in the human psyche.”

For the first time, Dante's Inferno is published complete with an apparatus that is entirely photographic. The journey through the underworld is signed by Roger Ballen, a visionary geologist of the unconscious who has spent his working life in the darkest reaches of the mind. The project came from an intuition of Didi Bozzini, curator and reader of the Commedia, who saw the surprising affinity between Dante's imagery and the Ballenesque universe.

“The Inferno was built by Dante as a theatre of wonders,” Bozzini observes. “The repeated appearance in the mind of unexpected, disconcerting, frightening or astonishing visions is exactly what holds up the narrative scaffolding of the poem.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
