Pictures made in the middle of the nineteen eighties, in a dense and insistent black and white through which Magurno draws with care the outline and the weight of objects and settles the value of the spaces between them.

In these southern landscapes there appear, often lifted out of a black ground because they are pale or because of what the light does, sculptures and objects made as art but also parts of buildings and structures of every kind — reinforced concrete included — that take part in the great business of building over a landscape, adding themselves to the nature that was there. And road signs, washing hung out that looks like human presence, cars under tarpaulins that, mysterious objects even while one recognises them, call up the work of Christo, and animals painted or carved.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
