The work of Rodney Smith (1947-2016) is an invitation to enter a world suspended between illusion and reality. Far from the modern conventions of documentary or realist practice, Smith forged a language of his own on the border between those two worlds.

Sublime and supreme, each of his pictures exerts a real fascination on whoever contemplates it: a place of polarity and duality, of the statement and its contradiction, of the right side and the reverse. Smith does not record the world so much as transform and heighten it, and only this medium can return in a flash such unusual visions, sudden and dazzling scopic drives.
