Some X-ray plates found in an abandoned asylum turn out to be portraits in their own right, their gazes loaded with an unknowable past, striking and almost passing through the viewer. They are the backbone of this volume, which sets those faces among pictures of the place: walls where mould seems to bear witness to past events, damaged prints, drawings by the inmates.
