Chloe Sells worked as a personal assistant for American writer and journalist Hunter S. Thompson from 2003 until his death in 2005. This book combines Sells' photographs of Thompson's home—documenting the interior, his possessions and handwritten notes—with landscapes of Aspen, Colorado, and her recollections of her time spent working with him. Some of Sells' hand-printed photographs have been overlaid with traditional marbling techniques from Italy and Japan, to create a psychedelic ride through the home of one of the most brilliant writers of our time. The publication coincided with an exhibition of the work at Galerie Miranda, Paris. Hunter S. Thompson, a counter-culture icon, was best known for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971) and for creating 'Gonzo Journalism'; alongside his distinctive and original voice, he was also known for his love of firearms, contempt for authority and chaotic lifestyle. Sells' images weave the intimacy of a private home with the mythology of its inhabitant.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
