We are living in the golden age of cocaine. Consumption and production have never been higher, despite more than 50 years of the War on Drugs. For many Europeans and North Americans, cocaine is a party drug; for many Latin Americans, it is a source of bloodshed, violence, corruption and death. Sangre Blanca by award-winning documentary photographer Mads Nissen delves into the murky depths of the cocaine trade, examining the human consequences along its journey—from the neglected countryside of Colombia, to the cartel lands of Mexico, to craving consumers on a European dancefloor. The most significant exploration through photojournalism of the cocaine industry published to date, it follows the white powder across continents, exposing an uneasy link between Western pleasure and Latin American violence. 'The War on Drugs has been raging for more than 50 years. I wanted to question whether it is working—and if so, for whom.' For Nissen, photography is all about empathy: creating understanding and intimacy while confronting contemporary social issues such as inequality, human rights violations and the lack of global responsibility.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
