Foreword by Vaughn Wallace
Selected, edited and sequenced by the photographer

Over 170 previously unseen images by photographer Elliott Erwitt are published for the first time in Found, Not Lost. Spanning more than sixty years, the photographs—often taken during lulls or breaks between assignments in his prolific career—have been selected, edited and sequenced by Erwitt himself. Now in his nineties, Erwitt began revisiting his archives in 2018 after his first retrospective, faced with the burden and responsibility of being custodian of his own work, and embarked on the exhaustive process of reviewing every photograph in his studio. The book has been an opportunity for him to revisit the photographs he made in his early career and to uncover meaning upon second glance that was not apparent when the image was originally taken. The master of visual one-liners—bold statement images replete with humour, irony and acknowledged absurdity—here selects photographs that are quieter, more subtle, suggesting his increasing confidence in his own eye. From post-war Europe to the former USSR, from the West Coast to the East Coast of the US to Japan, Brazil and Birmingham, the images contain familiar themes of dogs, children and delight, alongside intensely personal photographs of his first wife and first-born daughter.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
