Selected by the author from some 600,000 frames
A gathering of a hundred and seventy unpublished frames by the great master, chosen by him recently from work made over more than sixty years: the first dates from 1947, the last from 2010. In 2018, having just turned ninety, Erwitt decided to go back into his archives looking for images never published or simply old forgotten views — something that deserved to be found again rather than lost. For nearly two years he went through some six hundred thousand frames made across his long and extraordinary career, from those taken at barely seventeen and developed in the family bathroom to his most recent assignments in Scotland and Cuba. Setting aside the best known and most recognisable shots, with a career of awards and success behind him, he chose to look back and to find in old images, with today’s eyes, new meanings that had been invisible when they were first made. From post-war Europe to the former Soviet Union, from Latin America to Japan, from the United States to Cuba, the pictures hold some of his recurring subjects — dogs, children, life in its most joyful and familiar forms — alongside work from his famous assignments and deeply personal images of his first wife and his daughter Ellen.
