FASHION brings together photographs made by Mark Power over 27 years across 23 countries, capturing places where things are built, repaired or manufactured—from construction sites and factories to theatres and shipyards. Some images focus on monumental structures, others on quiet details, but all reveal Power’s careful composition and attention to light, colour and form.

Presented without captions or dates, the photographs are sequenced visually rather than chronologically, creating unexpected connections and a poetic atmosphere. Small moments of humour and human presence emerge throughout the book, transforming industrial and commercial spaces into something more ambiguous and reflective.

The project developed from Power’s long-term interest in construction imagery, inspired in part by Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan’s Evidence. Some of the earliest photographs were taken during the building of the Millennium Dome between 1997 and 2000, a project that established his approach of working independently within commercial commissions while maintaining complete artistic freedom.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
