In this book, British photographer Mark Power revisits the interplay between reality and imagined space that defined his earlier work The Shipping Forecast (1996). Using the outer edges of London mapped in the A to Z atlas as his framework, Power explores suburban landscapes that feel both familiar and strangely abandoned.
The photographs depict an overbuilt environment where houses, streets and buildings appear suspended in a quiet state of decay and stillness. Beneath pale skies and endless stretches of pebble-dash architecture, the energy of the city seems to dissolve into melancholy and inertia. Accompanying the images, David Chandler’s autobiographical text expands on these themes, reflecting on memory, childhood and the emotional geography of suburban life.
