Leave and Let Us Go presents a portrait of Iraq—a country often misunderstood and misrepresented. Alexandra Rose Howland combines her own photographs with found images and written testimonies, with the aim of challenging and expanding the ways that geopolitical events are communicated. Howland first moved to Iraq as a photographer in 2017 to try to understand a country and people she had previously only encountered through the media. She had been eleven when the Twin Towers were attacked and the news agenda shifted to the War on Terror and Weapons of Mass Destruction. When she arrived in Iraq, she found a country far removed from her expectations and was intent on creating work that communicated this. The book is the culmination of Howland's photographic work and archive created across Iraq from 2017 to 2021, drawing on images shot by soldiers and civilians, written testimonies and found objects to broaden the dialogue around the country, reveal the human side of a fragmented nation and question the contemporary conundrum of image saturation.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
