Since 2017 Ingar Krauss has portrayed sugar beets in their individual form. As in his still-life book 39 Bilder of 2016, he also stages the sugar beets in natural light against a dark background, photographs them analogue in black-and-white and reduces them to the essence of their appearance. Over the years a typology of this Beta Vulgaris has arisen. His sugar-beet physiognomies let the cultivated plant appear in simple dignity and melancholy alike.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
