For the series Stadtrand Berlin - published here for the first time on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Wall - the city photographer André Kirchner (*1958) photographed from March 1993 to March 1994 along the historic city boundary of the now reunited capital. The geographic starting point was the former border control point Drewitz. Moving counter-clockwise, within a year he advanced to the Glienicke Bridge near Potsdam. As his perspective Kirchner chose the view from the surrounding countryside towards the city. In 60 individual shots a picture emerged of the periphery of the greater city as it had been defined in 1920, whose 234 km length nearly matches today's extent.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
