Auschwitz is a much-illuminated place, researched for decades, visited by millions each year. Yet directly next to the camps exists an almost unknown sphere: the everyday home of people who, through historical and biographical circumstance, have become neighbours of the sites of horror. Andreas Langen and Kai Loges travelled, photographed and described these zones over years. A large fund of images and texts has emerged: documentary shots of locations and people, supplemented by precise, context-explaining texts. The book is a reflection on the historical site.
