When someone in the 21st century calls photographs painterly, one can read it as a derogatory or ironic hint, since photography sought to supplant painting as the leading artistic medium in the century before last. The photographs of the Berlin artist Anna Lehmann-Brauns, however, manage entirely free of irony to translate the painterly into a contemporary photographic language. Whether she photographs the Bosphorus from the window of a ferry in Istanbul, interiors in Berlin pubs, gay clubs in San Francisco, dusty shop windows of Charlottenburg junk shops or self-built model spaces, her images always develop an enigmatic, magical mood that draws the viewer in.
