50 years of “1968”: the student protests from the picture-perspective of the riot police. Arwed Messmer has worked for ten years with utilitarian photographic documents from public archives, the visual basis of his artistic work. In the Police History Collection he researched image holdings that the police produced during the student unrest of the 1960s as part of their usual self-documentation. These largely unpublished pictures show a different view of the historical events than the press pictures that dominate our visual memory to this day. Messmer digitally reworks and re-sequences them.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
