Willy Fleckhaus (1925–1983) was called the “most expensive pencil in Germany” and “Germany's first art director”. Like no other he shaped the visual culture of the still-young Federal Republic in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. He became internationally known through his groundbreaking layout of the youth magazine twen, which through its editorial concept, generous layout, modern typography and photography shaped several generations. Fleckhaus worked with important photographers of his time such as Will McBride, Thomas Höpker, Hans Feurer, Charlotte March and Ulrich Mack.
