Gerhard Vormwald, born 1948 in Mannheim, died 2016 in Paris, caused a stir nationally and internationally with his works in the 80s and 90s. With his surreal staged images and montages he visually overrode gravity and our imagination even before the invention of Photoshop. In his pictures people float, water flows upward, things dance in space in surreal choreographies. This book gives an overview of his found and invented image-worlds, from early documentary pictures through architectural montages to fully staged photography.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
