For a decade the artist Andrea Grützner (*1984 in Pirna) has been working on her photographic series in the country inn Erbgericht Polenz in eastern Saxony. The building, which has fascinated her since childhood, points in its name to a regional cultural history reaching back to the Middle Ages and concerning jurisdiction. Its interior holds a historically grown collage of materials and spaces, to which the locals' memories and emotions have attached since its opening in 1898. Grützner does not foreground the familiarly nostalgic and stereotypical of the provinces; instead she elaborately stages the deserted, labyrinthine interior with partly coloured flash before her analogue camera.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
