From the pitches of European amateur football. Football is part of our European culture and football pitches are part of our landscape; one finds them in every country, every town, every village. To tell a story of these pitches, the Dutch photographer Hans van der Meer began in 1995 to photograph matches of the amateur leagues. His landscape pictures show both the games themselves and the world beyond the playing fields, first in the Netherlands, which led to his famous book Dutch Fields (1998), and then throughout Europe. This volume gathers 81 mostly solitary goalkeepers.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
