Andrea Diefenbach's images from the rural regions of the Republic of Moldova are a journey through time to a place that, since its independence 30 years ago, has been stuck in an identity crisis. This visual stocktaking is already her second book about the country, torn between the EU and Russia, standstill and progress, corruption and the rule of law. Her quiet, sometimes bizarre observations testify to great empathy for Moldova and the attitude to life of its people. In their unexcited calm, the images adapt to the tempo of Moldovan everyday life, swinging between departure and stagnation. The book gathers photographic vignettes from a country in limbo and sets them in context through facsimiles.
