Scars generally carry a negative connotation: they are not shown to others or exhibited in public but kept quietly hidden away, in an extremely private realm. Miyako Ishiuchi photographs such scars, which are so like a personal secret: illness, injury, accidents, war, distressing and painful experiences that suddenly befall a person. While we hope to remain unblemished through life, we must all sustain and live with wounds, visible and invisible. Running the fingers over smooth flesh, the encounter with some irregular coarseness tells of the presence of a scar, an imprint of the past welded onto a part of the body.
