Portraits that delve into the power of objects and memories, bringing the intimacy shared between a person and an object into the realm of public experience. Working with Shinjoji Temple in Kanazawa, Miyako Ishiuchi photographed a collection of kimono made and worn specifically for the young, known as hyakutoku kimono and semamori, whose portraits capture the thoughts, prayers and lives of both community and family for a newborn child. In her text Ishiuchi recalls that a silk kimono lasts at best three generations; when she pulled at the seam of a superb formal kimono she had received, the silk disintegrated as though the foundation of the fibre had crumbled, and she could only apologise to the cloth, a historical artefact that should not have been meddled with.
