The seething, pounding, pulsing, stifling bustle of Calcutta. In the commentary Chikage Ohmi observes that destitution means, more than anything, abandonment, and that for this reason the pictures are abundant but not indulgent. Michio Yamauchi does not divide human beings by ethnicity: capturing them vividly alive, driven by their spirit and emotion, the photographs make the question of nationality irrelevant, and prompt wonder, before any talk of foreign lands, at his sympathy and imagination towards any kind of heterogeneous presence.
