After the death of his mother in April 2016, Yasuhiro Ogawa found several reels of 8mm film while sorting through her apartment. He projected them onto a wall in her last living space, rewound them and watched them again, this time with a camera in hand. The photographs of the 8mm projections are interspersed with pictures of trees, old belongings and the dying mother, inviting the viewer into some of Ogawa's most distant memories as he must have re-remembered them while watching the reels. Ogawa writes that the films were filled with the smell and air of an everyday life now far away, and that, staring at the battered images on the wall, he thought to remember his mother in the form of this book. Browsing it is an intimate experience: the story is personal, yet no bond between people is as relatable as the one with a mother, and the book is sweet, bittersweet and melancholic. The afterword is in Japanese and English.
