A somnolent journey through a monochrome world. On turning fifty, Yasuhiro Ogawa went back over the negatives accumulated over the years, found there the self of the days spent travelling, and looked at the prints in the darkroom as if in dialogue with that former self. In the afterword Ogawa notes that 27 years earlier he had taken the ferry from Kobe to Shanghai and set out on a long journey through Asia that took him to China, Myanmar, India, Cambodia, Tibet and other countries, and that it now seems like a dream. The photographs, developed and edited many years after the return, present the travels as impressions from a dream; the black and white creates the world as seen through the eyes of a young adventurer overwhelmed by what he sees, who surrendered to the experiences and sights he met.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
