A solitary butterfly seems to flutter over the pages, crossing the sea in flight to Miyakojima. Turning them, one senses that Atsushi Fujiwara's eye and the eye of the night butterfly begin to combine with the gaze of a late father: in Miyakojima, a sacred sphere, the butterfly flits back and forth between earthly life and the other side, this world and eternity. Fujiwara says that without photography the drive to express, scattered as fragments inside, would never have coalesced. History and memory of the country of his birth and of his family, associations, the shapes of things, the sense perception of alleyways and locales, dreams and the unconscious, thoughts about the lives of people who are no longer, time lost, mementos: past and present join in light and shadow on a sheet of photographic paper, a dreamworld of the soul, the butterfly being since ancient times a symbol of the soul.
