The first of photographer Marc Wilson's Travelogue books gathers thirty-one photographs made on the road during his travels through Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Republics. The images, drawn from journeys to Moldova, Poland, Romania, Transnistria, Lithuania and Ukraine, were made between gigs of his other long projects, in moments of pause and observation. The book opens with a story from the autonomous territory of Transnistria, Friday 13 April. Each photograph is presented with a brief locating note rather than a full caption, allowing the sequence to function as a quiet, observational notebook—a portrait of corners of Europe often outside the dominant Western frame, photographed with attention and without exoticism. With the next volume of Travelogue, Wilson would return to Ukraine in the context of the war that began in February 2022; the first volume holds a record of a region in a different register, before the full-scale invasion.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
