Remnants by photographer Marc Wilson is set in the far north of Italy, in the alpine landscape where fierce fighting took place during the First World War in what was known as the 'White War'. Italy and Austria-Hungary clashed in the highest, coldest mountains, building roads, dynamiting passes, tunnelling through ice; the war ended one week before the armistice of November 1918. Wilson was approached by the Italian architect Marco Ferrari in 2019, who had seen his earlier work The Last Stand on coastal defences of the Second World War, and the two collaborated on a study of how this earlier conflict has left its trace on the mountainscape. The book combines Wilson's restrained alpine landscape photographs—made in October 2021 and March 2022, often with early starts in the snow—with an essay by Ferrari and illustrations by Jane Randfield. The result is a quiet survey of the high-altitude trenches, abandoned posts and scarred slopes still legible a century after the war's end.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
