The Last Stand is Marc Wilson's long-running body of work on the enduring military relics of the Second World War along the coastlines of the United Kingdom and Northern Europe. Between 2010 and 2014 Wilson travelled 23,000 miles to 143 locations to make these photographs—from the Channel Islands and the north and west coasts of France to Denmark, Belgium, Norway and the eastern shores of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. He focuses on the defensive bunkers, gun emplacements, blockhouses and pillboxes built along these shores, and on the way they have become embedded in the surrounding landscape: half-buried in dunes, drifting out into the surf, sliding off cliff edges or weathered into the heather. Some have disappeared, taken by shifting sands and rising seas; others have surfaced, revealing again the historical weight of these coasts. This fourth edition, in an edition of 1500 copies, brings together the project as a single revised volume, with a research text by Eliane Wilson and an afterword by Roy Exley.
