The Land is Yellow, the Sky is Blue brings together photographer Marc Wilson's work made in Ukraine in the wake of the full-scale Russian invasion of February 2022. Across two years Wilson made repeated journeys to the country to listen to and document the lives of Ukrainians displaced and affected by the war—families in temporary shelters, children's drawings made far from home, communities continuing the work of daily life while bombs fell elsewhere. The book pairs Wilson's photographs with texts by Ukrainian writers Anna Nekrasova, Julia Budnik, Larysa Shyposha and Dmytro Vygovskyi, and with illustrations by three children, Misha, Masha and Tonya. The combination of restrained landscape and portrait photography with first-hand testimony and children's drawings refuses both spectacle and despair, holding instead to dignity and to the particular: a yellow field, a blue sky, a person, a sentence, a remembered house. The title is drawn from a child's description of the national colours.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
