For more than a thousand days, since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022, photographer Marc Wilson shared images on social media made on his earlier travels in Ukraine—a small daily reminder and a longing for a more peaceful time. A Thousand Days of Longing gathers a selection of those images into a small book, threaded with short story fragments: his attempt, as a photographer, husband and father, to preserve memories of a world before the war. The sequence opens with photographs made on his travels through Ukraine and ends with an image taken eighteen days after the full-scale invasion. Without pointing fingers, the book is an observation of life and love in troubled times—work that asks the reader to hold both states at once, the peaceful past and the violent present, and to recognise the value of ordinary days. It is the second part of his ongoing Travelogue series, which began with photographs made in Eastern Europe between 2015 and 2020.
