A Wounded Landscape — bearing witness to the Holocaust is the result of a six-year project that took photographer Marc Wilson to over 130 locations in 20 countries, documenting the physical traces of the Holocaust and pairing them with the deeply personal stories of 22 survivors, those who were killed and their descendants. The photographs encompass the well-known sites—Auschwitz, Belsen, Dachau—and many other places of atrocity within cities, towns, villages, fields and forests whose history has faded from public memory: ghettos, destroyed communities, internment camps, transit camps, labour camps, sub-camps, extermination camps and displacement camps, connected by the landscapes that surround them and by the forced journeys made between them. Wilson's images keep their distance, refusing both spectacle and sentimentality; the testimonies and captions hold the names, the dates and the human particulars. The book is held in collections including Yad Vashem, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, and was shortlisted for the Lucie Photobook Prize.
