Torikumo, from the seasonal word 'tori kumo ni iru' (birds enter the clouds), describes migratory birds disappearing far away into the clouds as they return north in spring. After picturing her hometown in Tohoku and snowy landscapes without a named place, Haruka Fujita turns here to the traditional themes of natural beauty in Japanese aesthetics as painted on sliding screens and folding screens.

She photographed sliding screens covered in gold and silver leaf, which she had acquired at an art supply shop, and printed them on photographic paper as the base of each work. She then photographed harsh but beautiful nature, flowers, trees, birds and other animals, on 4x5 film and printed them over the earlier prints, by hand in the darkroom, letting chance and discoveries on the spot shape the nuances of contrast and texture. The finished compositions use the blank space characteristic of screen paintings, and their layers of tone, based on dark colours, resemble paintings that have existed for a very long time. The accordion binding connects all the pages, making the photobook similar to a picture scroll. A limited special edition of 50 copies includes a print.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
