One hundred sewing boxes photographed by Eye Ohashi. The project began when she noticed the sewing box of her mother, a lover of sewing, and continued as she widened her subjects to other people's boxes, reached through friends and their acquaintances.

From sturdy boxes that must have been passed down through generations to confectionery tins, plain plastic toolboxes, rattan baskets, cloth bags and zip bags, a sewing box is a small everyday object, yet the choice of container, the kinds of tools and the way they are organised and stored reveal the personality and taste of the owner. Used over the years, these boxes give off a quiet charm and the warmth of human connection, which makes the book strangely calming. The photo critic Mika Kobayashi reads the sewing box as a way of looking at clothing not as a consumer item but as an act of care tied to the body, to the passing of time and to the people around us.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
