Tomoyuki Sakaguchi's debut photobook brings together photographs taken at night, with long exposures and digital editing, in the residential neighbourhoods of Tama, a large planned development in western Tokyo. The images turn the everyday suburban landscape into scenes that feel strange, even slightly menacing, yet they are not built on irony alone: from Tama's planned uniformity of preset shapes and colours the photographer draws out individuality, beauty and a surprising vitality. While the residents are presumably asleep, the available artificial light renders garages, driveways, walls and infrastructure such as utility poles as if they were elements of a carefully constructed model set. Martin Parr has described the photographer as exploring suburban scenes in and around Tokyo with an eye that is both disquieting and beautiful, one of the photographers contributing to the revival of interest in night shooting.
